"There are so many rules about making videos. Because it's just like so many bland guidelines for the people programming the videos like on MTV or charts shows they have in England and Europe. They basically want a nice little thing or a lot of fast editing and you know, it's just like a commercial, which is fine. I understand the concept. I think if more Top 40 acts would just stop making fucking commercials and at least have some respect for their own music, even if it's bland shitty music and make something decent. They've got all the cameras and these big budgets. And have more respects for filmmaking and movies in general and try and really stand out instead of just market. But what can you do, if they want to market records and they want to make money, I can't really blame them for doing it." (Black Francis, Alternative press, 1989) | ![]() |

A painted sky with clouds. In front of it, the Pixies. Black Francis throws flowers in the air. The song begins. The Pixies are playing in front of the painted sky. There are dead roses everywhere. The video is nearly normal, with successive takes of the band members. Except that they systematically stare at the camera with faces showing not the slightest emotion (this will be like this the whole video). Then the camera gets crazy, with faces and bodies appearing like in a distorting mirror. Instead of lip synching, Black Francis and Kim Deal just open their mouths wide when they are supposed to sing. You have to see Joey looking at the camera while playing his solo part (is there a beginning of ironic smile on his face?). "It's really funny and weird and we're hoping there'll be a fluke and they'll play it, at least for the humor value. The look of it is real cheap. There's no lip synching. We just open our mouths real wide and go aaaahhh… Some friends of ours directed and we used local film students around town. Water on the brain is the theme." (Black Francis, Alternative press, 1989) In an interview to MuchMusic, Black Francis said that the idea of opening the mouths wide instead of singing was taken from a Talk Talk video, "It's My Life", in which the singer, Mark Hollis, had an open mouth painted on the face. |
The Pixies playing in a rehearsal room. The video is a succession of very short takes, usually in slow motion, sometimes blurred, clouded by smoke, or saturated by light. Everything is in black and white, and there is no intent to make the action match the song, except when Black Francis consciously lipsyncs the line "Rock me Joe!" while staring at Joey. This is the first take in color. Some others will appear later, more especially towards the end. "That guy from Sonic Youth and that guy from Pere Ubu booted our video on "Night Network" because Joey made a thumbs-up sign" (Black Francis diary, Melody Maker, 1989) |

"As Velouria inevitably rose up the UK pop charts during the summer, a much coveted spot on TV program TOP OF THE POPS was denied the band because of a BBC rule that states only singles with videos can be performed on the show." (Music Express, 1990) "We had to think about something because everybody was giving all this shit because we didn't have a video to go with the single. So we just gave them something." (Kim Deal, Rock A My Soul fanzine, 1990) In a Manchester quarry, the 4 Pixies stand on rocks. As the song begins, they start running in direction of the camera. But the song is long and the distance is short (about 10 seconds are needed to reach the camera), so they are running in slow motion. Very slow motion. One frame after another. The Pixies are running, running, running. Black Francis is the first to pass by the camera, David is very close. But where is Joey? Oh yes, he was out of the picture, but now he is jumping (nearly) on the camera. Come on Kim! Well, there are only the rocks now. The end. | ![]() |
![]() |
In a dressing room, the Pixies dress up as bikers (leather boots, trousers, jackets). They also take hand-free mics. This is filmed as a succession of short takes in slow motion. Then, as in a western movie, 4 side-cars appear on the screen, riding towards the camera. Real bikers ride the motorcycles, the Pixies are only passengers. Now they walk in a corridor and then we see the light again: we are in a stadium. The song ends. Then appears on the screen: "Pixies Live, Olympisch Stadion, Amsterdam, 28/9/90" . "Allison" begins. The Pixies are on the pitch and play. As they are quite far apart, the camera moves from one to the next. The song ends on a white screen. |
![]() |
On a futuristic set, the Pixies seem to have a hard time: they have to play facing a very violent wind and a bright light. They wear sunglasses, have sometimes to lean about 1 foot forward to resist the wind, and happen to have their mouths blown completely open (nice effect!). Alec Eiffel is also there, and sometimes you can see him playing the keyboards (Eric Drew Feldman). There are also some takes on physics formula appearing from time to time. At the end, for a very short time you can see the crew, the fan and the smoke machine. | ![]() |
![]() |
"This is a Jesus And Mary Chain song!", then the song begins. A short sequence of quick takes on faces, hands and feet, then the image is split in 12 squares, and this until the end. In the four upper squares appear the Pixies' heads, in the four middle ones their hands, and in the four bottom ones their feet. This is as if the Pixies had decided to literally illustrate their band name, as they really look like silly midgets in this outfit. They successively appear in full light and semi-shadow, then just before the end a sudden close-up in all the 12 squares gives a quite dramatic conclusion to this simple, but very nice video. | ![]() |
![]() |
This is a 1997 video made by V23 design group. The rythm of images is frantic, so be careful with your eyes. In the succession of images, you can see takes of the band playing; a dog; close-ups on tongues; a man, half-naked, tighten, wearing this stuff you put to dogs to prevent them from scratching their head; the stone from the cover of Death To The Pixies, which crashes on the ground at a certain point in the video (is it a symbol?); some lettering similar to the compilation design. The word "DEBASER" often appears, as well as "CHIEN" (once suspended in front of the dog), and "HO" & "HA" when required by the lyrics... Note: a 5 sec. clip of the video can be seen on the official 4AD Pixies page (the "more soon" was written back in 1997, so be patient) |

Comments | One of the first concerts of the Pixies in Europe, in a double act with Throwing Muses, presented at the time as "the finest double act since the Romans decided to put the Christians and the lions on the same bill". During "Vamos", Joey Santiago takes a beer can to play the guitar. During "In Heaven", Black Francis waves his guitar in the air, and makes his mic fall down. These two songs appear as B-sides on Gigantic single. Release: apparently only a 4AD promo. |
