At least two sources back the idea that the recording session included 18 songs instead of 17:
- An interview from Gary Smith for the Rock A My Soul fanzine, in which he said: "We did three days in a row, working twenty-four hours a day to save money. We recorded seventeen songs (eighteen if one counts the secret one I have stashed away!)"
- An interview from The Pixies published in May 1988 in which Kim Deal says that they recorded 18 songs during the Fort Apache session.
So why would the 18th song be a Larry Norman cover, and not for instance Boom Chick A Boom, which is a Pixies unreleased song that they used to regularly play at the time?
The song by Larry Norman includes the sentence "Come on pilgrim, you know he loves you!". This fact either backs the theory of a cover, or explains the reason for the rumor to exist.
Another input to this file, is that there exists an article on Larry Norman which explicitly backs the theory for this cover and adds bits on Black Francis' fascination for Larry Norman.
